Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Melbourne
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy in Melbourne — evidence-based inner healing & self-compassion. Brunswick & Coburg. Medicare rebates available.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that understands the mind as made up of different "parts" — some that protect us, some that carry burdens from the past. IFS helps you develop a compassionate relationship with all your inner parts, guided by the calm wisdom of your deeper Self.
How IFS therapy can help
- Understand the different "parts" of yourself and what each one is trying to do for you
- Gently approach the parts that carry pain, shame, or old burdens
- Develop a calmer, more compassionate relationship with all aspects of yourself
- Access your own innate capacity for self-leadership and healing
What IFS therapy sessions may include
- IFS-informed exploration of your inner world, at a pace that feels safe
- Identification of protective parts and the roles they play
- Compassionate work with parts that carry old pain or shame
- Often combined with other approaches such as EMDR, attachment work, or CBT where helpful

Frequently asked questions about IFS therapy
- What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr Richard Schwartz. It views the mind as made up of different "parts" — protector parts that try to keep us safe, and exiled parts that carry old pain or shame. IFS helps you develop a trusting, compassionate relationship with all your parts, led by the calm core Self.
- Is IFS the same as "inner child" work?
- There are similarities. IFS includes work with "exiled" parts, which often carry the pain of younger experiences. However, IFS offers a more structured framework, with specific attention to both protective and vulnerable parts, and the role of Self-leadership in the healing process.
- Can I access Medicare rebates for IFS therapy in Melbourne?
- Yes. With a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can access a Medicare rebate of $89.50 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Celia Dunsmore is a registered Medicare provider.
